Saturday, 7/9, Sabbath in Glendale, CO

Had a very relaxing Shabbos.  We davened/prayed in the hotel Friday night.
The forecast was for some rain Friday night, and it did rain and we might have
been caught in it walking home from services.  We had a nice dinner Friday
night.  Warmed up the food in the microwave right before Shabbos and wrapped it
in foil to stay a bit warm until we ate.  When we were buying it, I thought we
were getting WAY too much and would have lots of leftovers.  Usually, when we
buy takeout like this, it's only for me and Karen if we go away for the weekend.
I forgot that we had two teenage boys with us now.  So, we had no leftovers.

I had brought a couple of Shabbos clocks (plug-in electric timers since we don't
manually turn on/off electrical appliances on the Sabbath) to have lights on for
awake times and off for sleep/nap times.  They came in handy.  Another issue is
the door locks.  The key cards trigger an electrical circuit to unlock the door,
which is also a no-no.  Neighbors Renee and David had suggested recently to use
tape to cover up the door's jambplate.  A piece of duct tape (which I brought -
has come in handy a few times already!) taping the keycard over the jambplate
did the trick.  We only needed to do it when we all took a walk in the
afternoon.

In the morning, Arie, Josh, Naama, and I walked to East Denver Orthodox
Synagogue.  It's about a 1.5 mile walk, but with cutting thru some parking lots
and stuff it's about 1.3.  May not be so considerable for most people, but it's
a lot more than the normal 100 feet (maybe!) walk we normally have.  So we
headed out at 8:30AM.  It was quite warm even at that time, and very sunny.  We
tried walking on whatever side of the street had more shade.  Took about 25
minutes to get there.  After services there was a nice kiddush/reception for a
yahrtzeit commemoration (anniversary of death of a close relative).  We also got
invited for lunch by someone!  But I told him I still had my wife and daughter
back at the hotel (not to mention a lot of food), so I thanked him but declined
the offer.

We got back to the hotel at around 12:00.  Seemed to be less sunny on the way
back.  We had a nice filling lunch and all took naps for 2-3 hours.  In the mid-
afternoon there was a major storm producing drenching rains.  After it mostly
cleared up, we took a nice long walk thru a park near the hotel.  We came back
and had a light dinner.

At 7:30PM, Arie, Josh, Naama, and I walked back to the synagogue for services.
Got a lot of walking in today.  Met an old high school classmate (Rabbi Danny
Rapp) who is in Denver for a few weeks for the Yeshiva University kollel
program.  I hadn't seen him since high school (1985) but I had just seen him at
the Israel Parade in the city a few weeks ago.  He was giving a class at the synagogue
before services were to begin.  Funny that I should run into him
again so soon.  After evening services when the Sabbath was over, we got a
ride back with our neighbor in the hotel, a couple from Teaneck who actually
have kids that were/are in Arie and Josh's school.

Not sure yet what we're doing on Sunday.  Possibly heading down to Colorado
Springs area for some waterfalls, Pike's Peak, and some other cool Native
American place.
