Vegas. Karen started off the drive, while I was talking to my boss Lou for a
bit to catch up on some things at the office. On the way, we finally wrote the
postcards that we have been collecting at the various places. Afterwards, I was
able to catch up on some sleep while the kids played GameCube in the back.
Some pretty cool terrain along the way. As we hit Arizona for a bit, you can see
interesting cacti plants along the desert floor along with tumbleweed. It got pretty
windy at times, but no tumbleweeds blew across the road. Also drove thru some
canyon lands for a little while. Massive cliffs right up alongside the road. Very
impressive.
Niece Shani's flight was due to arrive at 12:20PM. We thought maybe we would
meet her at the airport if the flight was slightly delayed. Turns out the
flight was a bit early, so Shani took a cab to the hotel. I took over the
last hour of driving and we headed straight to the hotel. We had called ahead
to make sure we could check-in. It sure sounded like we could, but when we got
there, they said another hour. So we took our food cooler and put the stuff in
Shani's fridge for the time being. Then we went out for lunch at Adar Pizza.

Lunch time!! |
After lunch, we checked into the hotel (and moved the fridge food to our room).
It was literally 100F outside, so we decided to use the outdoor pool/hot tub for
a while and would head for The Strip when it cooled down a bit (maybe to 90 or
so!). At around 5:00PM we took the hotel shuttle to the beginning of the strip
and started to walk around. We hit the Luxor, the Excalibur, and New York New
York. Arie, Josh, Adina, and I went on the roller coaster at the New York casino.
It was a scorcher |
The shuttle back to the hotel leaves the MGM Grand at around 8:10, but we
weren't exactly sure where it leaves from. By the time we found out (Main
Entrance, on the other side of the strip), we had missed it by about five
minutes. We weren't sure at first, so we waited a bit and then called the hotel
to find out. The next one would be in an hour. So we took a couple of cabs
back to the hotel. (NV state laws forbids more than five people to a cab.)
For dinner we decided on Jerusalem Grill, a falafel/shwarma place. The food was
really good, and the check was even better since my sister told Shani to treat
us!!
After dinner (10:00PM) we were thinking of going back to the strip, but weren't
sure how parking worked. It seemed like you could go to any of the hotel self-
parking, but most have a max clearance lower than the height of the cargo
carrier on the van. But it was getting late, so we decided to head back and try
again tomorrow, after Hoover Dam. We'll try to head out tomorrow around 9:00 to
get there. It's about a 45 minute drive. Should be pretty cool to see and tour.
The girls will stay in Shani's room (since she has two beds and a sofabed), so
we don't have to shlep up any air mattresses from the van.
